Managing STAR Events!

With all of the snow these past few weeks, you may be feeling a little like me...stressed out with the fact that STAR events just will not get done! It has snowed, snowed, and snowed some more here in central Ohio. We have missed seven of the last ten days of school, and now it is time to get the students back into the "school" mindset. Here are some things that have helped me in the past to get through the next two weeks:

1. Make short "to-do" lists every day. Help your students to make short "to-do" lists too! In fact, I usually keep a pen and paper by my bedside so I can write down my thoughts before I drift off to sleep. It helps to get it off my mind and onto paper, so I don't have "to remember everything".

2. Be realistic with your students. Do not make yourselves crazy with "EVERYTHING" that needs to get done. Divide up tasks, practice good time management, and try not to stress out about your students' projects.

3. Make time for your family. Have dinner together. Go for a walk (or if you are like me...play in the snow)!

4. Be a motivator. Keep the enthusiasm up and offer help where needed!

5. Remember---these are your students projects. You are the adviser. Model the way with good behavior and leadership!

GREAT IDEA FOR CLASSROOM!

Today, the State Executive Council is completing a community service project entitled "Baby Shower for the Ronald McDonald House". For this project, the state officer team was asked to bring items for our "adopted" baby: The Ronald McDonald House. The team was then invited to a baby shower for the RMDH (invited by the Ohio State Adviser Paulette Farago), where they opened the gifts for the House at their state executive council meeting (where Paulette created a baby shower themed meeting room). The gift items for the house were given to the team in advance (which I have posted below). After the "baby shower" the state officers made a trip to the RMDH to drop off the gifts that were received at the shower.

This is a GREAT way to take community service to the next level! It helps students to not only help in the community, but also to get an immediate recognition activity (a baby shower with games and snacks).

We are looking for MORE ideas to use community service in the classroom! Feel free to share at this blogspot! I am looking forward to seeing and hearing your ideas!

Chapter Service Rubric Question

I was wondering if you could help me out?
My students doing a Chapter Service project that involves going and working with youth that have disabilities. My students want to plan a special activity to do. I am struggling with the section on the rubric regarding the evaluation. Does anyone have an idea of what to do here?

GREAT FACTS (FAMILIES ACTING FOR COMMUNITY TRAFFIC SAFETY)LESSON

Here is a lesson I completed yesterday and had an amazing reaction from my students. I wanted to share it with you. Here is the 1997-2003 Version.

Click on “No Phone Zone” episode

Show your class the Oprah episode of the dangers of texting and/or talking on a cell phone while driving. The episode is 40 minutes and there are no commercials. It is a great episode and clearly outlines the dangers of texting while driving, something our teenagers are doing every day!

This clearly fits into the FCCLA National Program, FACTS (Families Acting for Community Traffic Safety).

There is also a fun interactive computer game on the temporary Ohio FCCLA website related to texting while driving. If you click on the Games tab at the top, it will pop up. I suggest that you have your students play the game twice to see if they improve their reaction time. My students also enjoyed this game. This would be a great activity to do on day # 2 after they have watched the oprah episode.

My students were very moved by the episode and it lead to some great discussion. I created the review sheet and attached it so that you could make changes if you want.

Cluster Meeting in Washington DC

The meeting capacity for the National Cluster Meeting in Washington, DC was met on October 8 and registration for this location was closed. Additional registrations were accepted on an approval basis for special circumstances only. Registrations received and confirmed between October 8 – October 28 will be seated in overflow seating for all General Sessions in a satellite viewing room. Registrations for Washington, DC will no longer be accepted and there will be no on site registration.

Would you like to recognize at State Leadership Conference? Why not recruit a new chapter in your area of state! Check out where there are Family Consumer Science programs and no FCCLA chapters.

Select a school in your area of state, click on it. Look for Clubs and Organizations to see if the school has FCCLA. Next look in curriculum to see if it has an Family and Consumer Science department. You will usually find a contact name of the teacher with her email on the site. A personal invitation is the best way to get someone to be involved.

Presidential Volunteer Service Award

Ohio Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is an accrediting organization for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. In order to register under Ohio FCCLA, your chapter must be an Ohio FCCLA affiliated chapter.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation on behalf of the President of the United States to recognize the best in American spirit, and to encourage all Americans to improve their communities through volunteer service, and civic participation. The Award is given to individuals, families, and groups that have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service and civic participation over the course of a 12-month period. ( Ohio FCCLA- March 15, 2009-March 15, 2010)

Any individual, family, or group can receive Presidential recognition for their annual commitment to volunteer service. In addition, individuals who complete 4,000 or more hours of volunteer service over the course of their lifetime will be recognized with the President’s Call to Service Award. The Bronze individual award requires 100 to 174 volunteer hours. Silver individual award requires 175 to 249 volunteer hours. Gold individual award requires over 250 volunteer hours.

In order to record your chapter and/or individual, please fill in the form with members' names and emails (http://www.ohiofcclaadviser.com/resources/2009-2010_Information_and_Forms_Book_Section_3[1].pdf ) and email to Paulette Farago at pofarago@aol.com. You will then receive passwords for your members to record their volunteer hours

To earn an Award, individuals, families, and groups must keep a record of volunteer activities served. Activities may be kept by the Certifying Organization or can be tracked online with the USA Freedom Corps Record of Service. Below please find the criteria for receiving an award.

Volunteers are recognized in the following ways:

An official President’s Volunteer Service Award lapel pin

A personalized certificate of achievement

A congratulatory letter from the President of the United States

A letter from the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation

All awards will be given at Ohio FCCLA Leadership Conference on April 16 at Ohio Exposition Center in Columbus, Ohio. Applications must be received in the office prior to March 15, 2010.

In families and groups, each member contributing to the total number of hours must have served 25 hours or more.here are two types of awards- individual or organization (chapter). The levels are Gold, Silver and Bronze.
